When was the first State of the Union Address televised, and by whom?

The first State of the Union Address was televised in 1947 by Harry S. Truman. Harry S. Truman was the first president to deliver the State of the Union Address on television. In the past, other presidents delivered the annual speech, but it wasn't until 1947 that the speeches' started being televised. The first ever State of the Union address was given by George Washington in 1790, and the State of the Union was only shared with the public through newspapers until Coolidge broadcasted his address on the radio. The first president to ever use the phrase "State of the Union," was Franklin D. Roosevelt.

As you can see, there has been several State of the Union addresses given in the past, but it wasn't until 1947 that the speech started being broadcasted on television. Since then, every single speech has been televised. I found this information through Google Search. The process for finding my answer to my question consisted of me going to Google and locating the answer through the website: http://www.usgovinfo.about.com/. The information that was located from this website answered my question completely and gave me realiable information with important dates from history. Hence, this is why I feel that Harry S. Truman and 1947 is the best answer to my question, "When was the first State of the Union Address televised and by whom?"

What is the State of the Union Address?

In the United States Constitution, it says the following: "[The President] shall from time to time give to the Congress Information on the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient...." Article II, Sec. 3. I found this information on the website: http://www.gpoaccess.gov/. The State of the Union Address is an address directed to Congress about issues in the nation and how the President plans on handling these issues, but also, lets the President of the United States outline his step-by-step agenda on what he is planning to do for the nation to Congress.

Barack Obama gave his first State of the Union address on January 25, 2010. For this blog, I used Google Search to help me locate information on the State of the Union Address and this is what I found. Within my Google Search I found several websites with reliable information that would help me with this blog.
