Who is Florence Nightingale?

Florence Nightingale was born in 1820. Florence Nightingale had a broad education and became to realize that she did not like the lack of opportunity for females in her social circle. She was interested in helping the poor, but then later became interested in looking after people who were very ill. In this time period, nurses' were considered to be a little less than prositutes. After this, Nightingale began visiting hospitals looking for possible occupations for women. In 1854, the Crimean War broke out and nurses' were needed. Nightingale along with thirty-eight nurses went to help the people, and they ended up getting the place back in order. After the war in 1855, a Nightingale fund was set up to found a training school for nurses. After setting up the school, Nightingale received the Order of Merit and the badge of honour of the Norwegian Red Cross Society, along with several other accomplishments.

The assignment this week was to pick somebody that became famous in my major. I am majoring in nursing and the first person that popped up in my head was Florence Nightingale. I immediately thought of her because of how successful she became and basically started the nursing field for women. I am thankful for this because I have always been interested in helping people and nursing is the perfect profession for me. I feel that if Nightingale did not do everything that she accomplished that women would not be respected in the nursing field.

My thought for the blog consisted of coming up with the question, "Who is Florence Nightingale?" After this, I went to the first website listed and I found everything that I was looking for. The information that I obtained was accurate and very reliable because I checked the references that was listed on the page. The link that I used was: http://www.victorianweb.org/history/crimea/florrie.html.
